Introduction to Human Design Gate 17 and Gene Key 17

Human Design Gate 17 is The Gate of Opinions. These opinions are meant to be shared when they’re asked for, and not given freely. I have this gate defined and I can tell you, it’s not always easy to wait
to be asked!!! Gate 17 is also a gate of the big picture. While gate 62 (on the opposite side of the channel) is all about details, people with Gate 17 defined see the bigger vision.

Location of Gate 17 in your Human Design Chart

Gate 17 is located in the Ajna center of the bodygraph or human design chart.

The 17-62 Channel and Gate 17’s Human Design Circuitry

Think of Human Design Circuitry as the circuit board that lies beneath the rest of your design. Circuitry is the thing that all other aspects are placed upon. It lays the foundation and the energies here never change.  

There are 3 main circuits in Human Design: Individual, Collective, and Tribal. 

Gate 17 forms part of the Channel of Acceptance. Channel 17-62 is a Projected Channel that is part of the Understanding Circuit.

This channel is all about seeing the big picture without getting lost in the details. It’s being able to see the forest and the trees. It’s of utmost importance, with this channel defined in your Human Design, that you wait to be invited to share your opinions. When you do this, others will be amazed at your vast knowledge and understanding of the matter at hand. When you don’t wait to be invited to share, you’ll see that glazed over look in people’s eyes and/or feel their resentment towards you.

People with this whole channel defined often have trouble with their right eye.

This channel possesses incredible management skills and thus they make great project or office managers. They are great overseers of detailed work and projects.  

Tapping into Gate 17’s Energy

How does Gate 17 show up in your chart, and how can you tap into that big picture energy? Start by taking a look at your own chart to see if Gate 17 is defined (the line is colored in)  or undefined (the line is blank). Next, look at the Ajna Center to see if it is defined (colored in) or undefined (blank).

Here are the possibilities:

Defined Gate 17 in a Defined Ajna Center

If Gate 17 is defined for you in a defined centre you have access to this energy always. It’s part of who you are. You have loads of opinions and are able to see the big picture. You may have experienced trouble with your right eye throughout your life.

Defined Gate 17 in an Undefined Ajna Center

If Gate 17 is defined for you in an undefined centre it is considered dormant. It will be activated when you are with someone who has Gate 62 (the Gate of Details) defined OR when a planetary transit defines Gate 62. The themes of hanging gates in undefined centres often play out in relationships. 

Accessing Energy with an Undefined Gate 17

If Gate 17 is undefined for you, fear not! 
You’ll have access to the energy of this gate when you are with others who have it defined and/or through planetary transits. You can borrow this energy by being in the aura of someone who has it defined. 

Unveiling The Shadow of Gate 17

The shadow of Gate 17, according to Gene Keys, is opinion – which is interesting since it’s named the Gate of Opinion in Human Design! Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) explains that the danger here is in being bound by your opinions, not leaving space for the gift of Gene Key 17, which is far sightedness. 

A personal exercise for Gate 17 awareness

Observe your tendency to share your opinions without being asked to. I have this gate defined and it’s a constant battle! I’ll catch myself saying “ooops – you didn’t ask for that!” Try not to judge yourself, just notice.
