Introduction to Human Design Gate 1 and Gene Key 1

Human Design Gate 1 is all about authentic self expression. It’s the most yang (masculine) energy in the Human Design chart and it longs to be expressed. The deepest need of Gate 1 is to be creatively expressed in a way that impacts the world.

Location of Gate 1 in your Human Design Chart

Gate 1 is located in the G center of the bodygraph or human design chart, and houses creativity at its finest.

The 1-8 Channel and Gate 1’s Human Design Circuitry

Think of Human Design Circuitry as the circuit board that lies beneath the rest of your design. Circuitry is the thing that all other aspects are placed upon. It lays the foundation and the energies here never change.  

There are 3 main circuits in Human Design: Individual, Collective, and Tribal. 

Gate 1 is highly individual. 

It makes up part of the 1-8 channel, which is a design of someone who is creatively unique. The 1-8 channel in human design begs you to stand up and be counted as someone who’s making her own way in the world, on her own terms. If you have this channel, you’re probably very sensitive to criticism, and rightly so because when you’re criticized it feels like who you are is wrong instead of feeling like what you’re doing is wrong.

Tapping into Gate 1’s Energy

Take a look at your own Human Design chart to see if Gate 1 is defined (the number has a coloured circle around it)  or undefined (the number doesn’t have a coloured circle around it). Next, look at the G Center (the diamond shape in the middle of your chart) to see if it is defined (coloured in) or undefined (blank).

Based on your definition, here’s how Human Design gate 1 will show up for you.

If Human Design Gate 1 is Defined in an Undefined G Centre:

If Gate 1 is defined for you in an undefined center it is considered dormant. 

It will be activated when you are with someone who has Gate 8 defined OR when a planetary transit defines Gate 8.  

The themes of hanging gates in undefined centers often play out in relationships. Ask yourself:

• Where do I feel unable to express myself in a relationship to someone?
• Where do I harness or censor my creativity and/or my voice to make someone else comfortable?

If Gate 1 is Defined in your Defined G Center

If Gate 1 is defined for you in a defined center you have access to this energy always. 

It’s part of who you are. 
You’re here to stand in your creative expression and deliver your gifts to the world. 

Your energy is consistently creative and expressive and your drive to show up authentically is huge.

Accessing Energy with an Undefined Gate 1

If Gate 1 is undefined for you, fear not! 

You’ll have access to the energy of this gate when you are with others who have it defined and/or through planetary transits.  You can borrow this energy by being in the aura of someone who has it defined.

Unveiling The Shadow of Gate 1

The shadow of Gate 1, according to Gene Keys, is entropy.
Other words for entropy are uncertainty, disorder, haphazardness.

If you’re not standing in your creativity and feeling free to express it and lead the way as only you can do, how is entropy showing up for you?

Are you holding yourself back thinking that everything needs to be perfect before you can act?
Are you inconsistent with your creativity, putting it on the back burner until everything else is done?
Are you numb to your deep need to lead through creatively expressing yourself?

According to Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) the real shadow of this gate is numbness.
It’s not feeling energized enough to execute your mission.

If you’re living in the shadow of Gate 1, the first step is self awareness.
Acknowledge that you are here and get curious about how you can step into your full creative expression. 

The world needs you to stand in your fullest expression!

A personal exercise for Gate 1 awareness

Spend a day on a date with yourself.  Take along a notepad and pen, some music, crystals, whatever inspires you.  Maybe you’ll go to a coffee shop, a greenhouse, an art gallery, or a hike. 

Whatever it is that you do, be sure it feeds your soul so that you have space to create.  When inspiration hits, stop whatever you’re doing and write, draw, or voice it out.
